چکیده
Abstract. Satellite observations of radiation in the microwave and sub-millimetre spectral regions (broadly from 1 to 1000 GHz) can have strong sensitivity cloud precipitation particles atmosphere. These (known as hydrometeors) scatter, absorb, emit according their mass, composition, shape, internal structure, orientation. Hence, applications including weather forecasting, geophysical retrievals model validation. To simulate these requires a scattering-capable radiative transfer an estimate bulk optical properties hydrometeors. This article describes module used integrate single-particle over particle size distribution (PSD) provide for Radiative Transfer TOVS scattering code, RTTOV-SCATT, widely fast model. Bulk be derived range models Mie spheres (liquid frozen) non-spherical ice habits Liu Atmospheric Simulator (ARTS) databases, which include pristine crystals, aggregates, hail. The effects different PSD options on simulated brightness temperatures are explored, based analytical two-stream solution homogeneous slab. hydrometeor “spectrum” below GHz is described, along with its sensitivities composition or ice), shape. behaviour frozen changes frequencies above 200 GHz, moving towards optically thick emission-dominated regime more familiar infrared. region little explored but will soon covered by Ice Cloud Imager (ICI).

A novel heterodyne interferometer for millimetre and sub-millimetre astronomy
We describe a novel heterodyne interferometer currently under construction at Oxford. The instrument employs new techniques in heterodyne interferometry, with the aim of achieving very high brightness sensitivity in the millimetre band. It is a single-baseline tracking interferometer for operation in the frequency range 185-275 GHz with two 0.4m offset parabolic antennas separated by a 0.5 m ba...

Abstract The following text gives a brief overview of microwave radiative transfer in atmospheres covering the principles of radiative transfer in an absorbing and scattering atmosphere including surface reflection and emission. A few approaches for radiative transfer modelling are presented. Models for atmospheric absorption, particle absorption and scattering as well as surface emission are i...

Satellite observation of Earth's atmosphere in the millimetre and sub-millimetre wavelength region is complementary to those in the visible and infrared spectral region. The emission and opacity of the atmosphere, and scattering by ice particles are all exploited for sensing various layers of the atmosphere in terms of water vapour content, temperature, molecular composition, precipitating wate...
